A page with a hole in it,
on purpose.

Most pages in this series are built from a course brief and a research pass. This one was built from a scorecard, because the research pass could not be used. What follows is why, and what it cost.

00What is on this site

One route, plus this page.

There is no /strategy route. Spyglass Hill has one, built on verified hole-by-hole strategy; Pebble Beach's strategy research is the record described in section 02, so there is nothing honest to put on such a page yet.

01The design direction

The signature of a course page is usually the thing that course is known for — a routing, a restoration, a seam between two landscapes. Pebble Beach has an obvious candidate in its coastline, and no verified data about it. What the database does hold, in full and three times over, is the card.

So the card is the signature. Eighteen columns scaled to their yardage, three tee sets layered, par printed under every hole because par is the one value that does not move. The gap between the sets reads hole by hole rather than as a single number at the foot of a scorecard — which is the only way to see that the 14th gives up 136 yards between the Resort and Forward cards while the 18th gives up 74.

02The data, and the row that was wrong

The database holds four tee sets for CRS-035. Three corroborate each other exactly — each sums to its stated yardage with zero variance, and all three carry an identical par on all eighteen holes.

TeeYardageSum of holesParUsed
Championship (Blue)6,8286,82872yes
Resort (Gold)6,4456,44572yes
Forward (Red)5,2495,24972yes

Why the fourth row is out

Its pars sum to 71, and it disagrees with all three other cards on the par of holes 3, 6, 9, 13 and 16. Par does not move between a course's own tee sets, so one of the four is describing something else.

It is flagged data_validated: true regardless. That check tests hole count (18), yardage variance (within 150) and par within ±1 — and 71 clears a ±1 test against 72. Nothing in it compares a course's tee sets against each other, which is the check that exposes this row in a single line.

03What that row cost

The project's deep-research record for this course was generated from the White card. Its hole-by-hole section describes the 3rd as a par 3, the 9th and 13th as par 5s and the 16th as a par 3 — fifteen pages of strategy for a course that is not this one. Its history section separately contradicts the established record in several places.

Because the sound claims cannot be separated from the errors without an independent source, none of it was used. That is why this page makes no claim about architects, opening year, ownership, championships, records, rankings, rating or slope. Section 05 of the course page says so, rather than filling the gap from somewhere else.

04Iteration passes

Pass 1 — build the drawing

Eighteen columns, three tee sets, par under each hole, the seaside stretch banded behind. Totals derived from the hole arrays rather than typed in, so the chart and the record section cannot drift apart.

Pass 2 — make it refuse to lie

The drawing asserts at load that par still sums to 72 and 36 out, that each tee set still sums to its stated yardage, that out and in still make the total, and that the 7th is still the shortest hole from every tee. If any of that fails it prints the failures in place of the chart rather than drawing a wrong picture.

Pass 3 — the assertion caught the author

An earlier draft claimed the 14th was the longest hole from every tee, and said so in six places. The assertion failed on its first run: from the Forward tees the 18th is longer, 458 to 436. The claim was corrected everywhere, and the fact that the longest hole moves is now on the page — a better observation than the one it replaced.

Pass 4 — match the series

A review against the rest of the family found the page carried neither the lead-capture block that 23 of the 25 index pages ship, nor a /guide route, which 21 sites have. Both were added, the capture block lifted verbatim from Spyglass so it stays byte-identical across the series. This page was then rebuilt on the wave-2 course-guide structure rather than the flagship one it first used.

05The audio

Two masters, both status: "ready" on the audio host: a bagpipe cut and a second remake. The page passes its queue explicitly rather than relying on the host manifest, because the deployed manifest has no pebble-beach playlist key — without an explicit queue the player would fall back to the entire library.
