- ARCHITECT
- Robert Trent Jones Jr., selected mid-1979; the 2013–14 rebuild was Jones and his RTJ II team returning to their own course, with Bruce Charlton’s role in the redesign documented by the USGA and Golf Digest
- OPENED
- 1 June 1986 — the NCGA’s offices had moved over from Spyglass Hill that April
- OWNER
- The Northern California Golf Association, which identifies Poppy Hills as the first course in the United States owned and operated by a golf association. Public access, not a private club and not a Pebble Beach Company resort course — the course states plainly that it is not affiliated with Pebble Beach Company
- LOCATION
- 3200 Lopez Road, Pebble Beach, California, in the Del Monte Forest — rolling ground under Monterey pine, with occasional views toward Monterey Bay rather than a procession of oceanfront holes
- PAR
- 71 — 36 out, 35 in
- BLUE TEES
- 6,320 yards — 3,345 out, 2,975 in. Rating and slope as printed on the card: 71.6 / 134 in the men’s category, 77.0 / 139 in the women’s
- THE LAND
- A 164-acre parcel in the Del Monte Forest that Samuel F. B. Morse had earmarked for golf; the official history dates the sale to 1977 at $7,000 per acre. Land-use approval followed in 1982, county planning in 1983, and a 7–5 Coastal Commission vote in 1984
- THE NAME
- Provisionally “Hilltop.” “Poppy Hills” came from an NCGA naming contest, won by Chuck Twichell of Santa Rosa
- THE 2013–14 REBUILD
- Closed March 2013, reopened 4 April 2014. Driven by water: irrigated turf fell from 82 acres to 62. Sand capping changed the drainage profile, rough was broadly eliminated in favour of wider corridors and natural sandy ground, and all eighteen greens were redesigned and rebuilt in bentgrass with open entrances and feeder slopes. Par went from 72 to 71 — a new 11th was built and the old dogleg par-5 12th became a downhill par 4
- SINCE THEN
- A 2021–22 refinements project reworked the greens at the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 11th, 13th, 14th and 17th, reshaped fairway bunkers at the 12th, and added or expanded championship tees on ten holes. NCGA’s own architectural review of 13 August 2026 is the dated record of that work
- PRO-AM
- Co-host of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991 to 2009 — one venue of several, never the sole one
- PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS
- Host of the First Tee event, later the PURE Insurance Championship, from 2014 to 2019. In 2019 the field played Poppy Hills and Pebble Beach on Friday and Saturday, with the final round at Pebble Beach Golf Links only
- USGA
- 2018 U.S. Girls’ Junior — Yealimi Noh beat Alexa Pano 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final; Lucy Li took medalist honours at 131 on rounds of 62 and 69
- COLLEGE GOLF
- 1991 NCAA Men’s Championship — Warren Schutte of UNLV won the individual title at 283, three clear of David Duval, with Oklahoma State taking the team title and Phil Mickelson tied fourth at 289. That was the pre-rebuild course
- MOST RECENTLY
- 2026 NCGA Amateur Stroke Play, 10–12 July — Sebi Aliaga won at 4-under 209, one ahead of Reid Buzby and Zachary Hawkins, closing with a 69 and a four-foot birdie at the last
- RANKED
- Golf Digest, California: 45th for 2025–26, after 44th in the previous edition; its best listed California position is 35th in 2015–16. The publisher records inclusion in America’s 100 Greatest Public from 2017 to 2024, peaking at 62nd in 2017–18
- COURSE RECORD
- Not asserted here. Matt Gogel’s second-round 62 in the 2001 Pro-Am is documented as the old course record, and Lucy Li’s 62 in 2018 is a separately documented round; neither can be presented as the current layout’s record without confirming the tee set and date with the golf shop
